ROME - At least 729 migrants successfully delivered from a ship sailing in the Mediterranean Sea and then transported to the port in Catania, Sicily. Rescuers also found nine bodies were killed while trying to reach Italy.
Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi said the country's coast guard has coordinated more than 6,000 rescue at sea over the last weekend and nearly 155 thousand immigrants have reached the country.
Renzi went on to assert if Italy will not be able to handle the immigrants with the same quantity in the next year as quoted from Reuters on Thursday (10/27/2016).
The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 3,500 people were killed or disappeared while trying to cross the Mediterranean from North Africa this year.
While the UN refugee agency, UNHCR stated that 2016 was the year that deadly for immigrants trying to reach Europe. We can confirm that at least 3,800 people have been reported dead or missing in the Mediterranean Sea so far this year, bringing the death toll in 2016 were the highest ever recorded, "said UNHCR spokesman, William Spindler.
